Mark Gertler painted this view of Ballard Down and Old Harry rocks in 1916, while he was staying with his friend Montague Shearman at Peveril House in Swanage, a place he loved.


This picture was probably painted in December 1916 while Gertler was staying at Peveril House, Swanage in Dorset, which was the holiday home of his friend, Francophile collector Montague Shearman. The scene has an impression of serenity, an aspect of life that Gertler, a pacifist, was endeavouring to seek during World War I.

In a letter to Carrington he wrote, "From every window one gets a good enough view for painting… The sea surrounds the house on two sides. There is just a bit of garden and then cliff, below that is the open sea!".

At the Slade, he made friends with C. R. W. Nevinson, the celebrated first world war artist, and Dora Carrington, Gertler's greatest love until her suicide in 1932. She neither reciprocated his devotion nor was prepared to let him go, and this relationship came close to destroying him.
For Carrington, however, their mutual fascination was emphatically spiritual rather than sexual and in the coming years she led him a merry dance, always keeping him on a string but sleeping with him only in the last resort.

He was terribly alone - in 1932, his beloved mother had died and, after Strachey's death from cancer, Carrington had shot herself; six years later, Ottoline gave up the ghost.
His final show, though admired by Duncan Grant, was not a commercial success. In 1939, Gertler dragged a mattress into his studio at the bottom of the garden, stuffed it against the door, closed the windows, turned on the gas and lay down to die. He left no note.

Mark Gertler committed suicide.
He was 47.

Chettle. Dorset Life.

The name Chettle comes from the Saxon for a deep valley, which describes the area very well.
Sometime around 1106 a nunnery was established here under the patronage of Henry I. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries the estate passed to the crown, until Elizabeth I sold it to the Chafin family, in whose hands it remained until 1818.

A lovely red-brick manor house in Queen Anne style, designed by architect Thomas Archer for George Chafin in 1710. Archer created an elegant masterpiece of English Baroque to replace an earlier Elizabethan house. The highlight of Archer's design is the sweeping double staircase in the Oak Entrance Hall, where the seperate arms describe an elegant arc and meet at the first floor balcony.


Chettle House, for it is hardly visible from the narrow lanes which surround it.

The church at Chettle is St Mary's, which was once supposedly the home of a font designed by Vanbrugh and described by Roland Gant as being 'up against the greensward, romantically dark and solemn and primly enclosed by iron railings'.
The lovely 16th century parish church, which is an attractive Decorated Gothic building with several Chafin family tombs.




After the death of the last Chafin without heir, the house was purchased by the Castleman family of Wimborne.
Edward Castleman died in 1946 and his descendants the Bourke family still own and run the estate today.
In 1996 this building was refurbished and opened as the Castleman Hotel and Restaurant by Teddy Bourke and his wife Barbara, since when it has featured in numerous guides, as well as newspaper and magazine editorial. Sadly Teddy Bourke died in 2011 and his skills as raconteur and host are greatly missed but Barbara and the rest of the team continue the good work.








To the north lies Cecil Beaton’s old estate Ashcombe House, which was bought by Madonna and Guy Ritchie.

They have been at loggerheads since their brother Teddy’s death 21 August 2011, and have not exchanged a single word over the past two years.
Just look at the neighbours: Crichel House, directly to the south of Chettle, was bought for £34 million last year by American hedge fund billionaire Richard L Chilton. To the north lies Cecil Beaton’s old estate Ashcombe House, which was bought by Madonna and Guy Ritchie for £10 million in 2001 (English country house of former resident and artist/designer Cecil Beaton).
But how much longer will the integrity of Chettle, one of only a handful of family-run, feudal estates across the country, remain intact?

"Я не люблю психотерапию. Я ее знаю, но не люблю по одной простой причине – потому что она очень редко бывает полезна. Человека на самом деле учит жизнь. Труд сделал из обезьяны человека. Чем меньше чешешь свое эго, тем меньше оно у тебя расстраивается. Тебе некогда думать о праздных вопросах: зачем я сюда пришел, дали ли мне уже пять наград, достаточно ли меня холят и лелеют. Не надо заниматься ерундой, нужно работать. Хороший психотерапевт, который слушает, понимает и помогает, – это такая же редкость, как хороший художник, музыкант. На меня психотерапевтическое воздействие оказывает искусство. Вот представьте, сейчас я вам повешу Мону Лизу, а вы не знаете, что это она. Вы пройдете мимо и не обратите внимания на эту, в общем, не очень молодую, некрасивую женщину. Но когда вы в Лувре и она висит в бронированном боксе, вы начинаете прыгать, снимать ее, ничего не видите из-за вспышки… и это сакральное место! Если вы очень внимательно смотрите, то вдруг открываете в себе то, чего раньше не видели. Тогда вы это проецируете на произведение искусства, и так оно вам помогает общаться с самим собой. Для кого-то проводником становится психотерапевт, для кого-то священник, для кого-то экскурсовод. Главное – прийти к себе, понять, что гордыня – это большой грех, что наша земля все равно взорвется, в этом плане я верю астрофизикам. Память о тебе, великом и прекрасном, даже если ты построил все лучшие дома, музеи, пароходы и самолеты, живет очень недолго. Ты сам себя не понимаешь, а рассчитывать на понимание самых близких людей может человек, который живет с большими иллюзиями. Гордыня – это когда ты думаешь, что можешь изменить мир. Ты можешь, но только очень небольшие участки. Я создала музей, маленький островок культуры, но даже в мыслях не могла представить, что я министр культуры. Я с большим сочувствием отношусь к человеку, который принимает эту должность. Потому что изменить огромную территорию с огромным количеством действующих лиц, экономическими контекстами – это безумно трудно."
