Fields of gold: rapeseed.


Up close, rapeseed, in flower, is a rather beautiful plant, with its languid eau de nil stalks, zingy yellow petals and spindle-shaped seed pods. It is a member of the brassica family, which explains the faint cabbagy smell, and was, like much else, brought here by the Romans, who used it for oil.
